Birthing Project: July 13, 2006
by Dr. Tom Camp
Did you ever have a project just drop into your lab and figure
God put it
there and expected you to do something about it? Last year I met
a group of folks that have the specific goal of helping pregnant
moms and newborn babies in underserved areas. They probably have
other goals, but that is the one I am most familiar with. I worked
with this group in Honduras this summer. The group is really quite
unusual. The group members are mostly from the USA, scattered
from all over.
They were putting on seminars for the midwives in the section
of Honduras where we do a lot of our work. At the seminar they
exchange ideas and methodology with the ladies of Honduras. About
80 – 90% of all deliveries in Honduras are by midwives.
The section where we serve and the seminars are held, it is even
higher.
I asked a 70 yr. Old midwife how many children she had delivered.
She just laughed and said she didn’t know but her grandmother
and her mother before her were all midwives. She was trained “OJT”,
plus certification by the government.
So, where do you come in? The ladies are in desperate need of
several things. They literally have no supplies or equipment.
Their needs include:
OB Wheels (gestational wheels) Blood Pressure Cuffs
Stethoscopes Fetoscopes
Neonatal Vitamins Prenatal Vitamins
Sterile Gloves Delivery Basins.
