Feeding the Hungry in Honduras
The soup kitchen, which feeds some 300 of the poorest children in
Yorito, has been expanded to six days per week and to include the
elderly poor. David Kelly, a Cruzadas Church pastor in charge of
this project, has estimated that $750 per month is needed. Present
commitments total about $600. If just a few more people will commit
to just a few dollars per month for a year, this goal can be reached.
Any amount, large or small, will help.
Honduras is one of the poorest of the third world countries.
The average annual income is under $1000. Most Hondurans live in
very sub-standard housing and have, if they’re fortunate,
2 or 3 changes of clothing. Many children have never had a pair
of shoes on their feet. Many of the homes are nothing more than
a shed; there is no furniture, no electricity, no running water.
Many families of 6 or 7 live in a small one room house; they sleep
on “mats” on dirt floors. Clothes are washed in the
river, or in a “pela”, a concrete outdoor bath tub.
Transportation is by foot…the more affluent may have a horse
or two or an old truck.
The first year I served food in the soup kitchen was tough. Sweat
and tears took turns rolling down my face as I carried plastic plates
to dirty little bodies. They sat, so patiently, waiting for that
rice. We have “stepped out of the boat” and started
feeding 6 days per week, even though at present, we don’t
have sufficient funds. We are praying that more donations will come.
That $3.00 for the latte you have every week, the $15 you spend
to eat out, or the $20 for your manicure…….I guess I’m
asking you to consider giving that up for the next few months to
help us help the poor in Yorito.
After all, we’re commanded by Jesus to feed the hungry and
clothe the naked.

Yorito Soup Kitchen Grows, Your Help Needed!
The Following Note submitted by Rod Beck
Praise God! The soup kitchen that was started by funds raised by
the VBS students at Good Shepherd UMC in 2005(see article: Children
Feeding Children) has grown thanks to God’s guidance and
the generous hearts of members of the Livingston Chapel UMC and
Wesley Memorial UMC Yorito teams of 2006. The kitchen was originally
set up to feed seventy-five children three days per week. This newly
formed partnership of the three teams has made it possible to expand
it to more than One Hundred and Fifty Children and Elderly Six Days
per Week. AMEN!!!
Although nearly $600.00 of the $750.00 per month needed has been
raised and pledged for the next year this is a ministry that simply
can not end next year. By September of 2007 many of the families
of Yorito will have come to expect the feedings and it is our
responsibility to make these available to all the hungry of Yorito
for years to come. We are looking for kind-hearted people that
want to help us end hunger and hunger related illness in Yorito!
We are accepting year long pledges of $10.00 through $100.00 per
month. We would also welcome any one time donations that you would
like to contribute to our cause. I
