Benefit Planned for AHMEN in Jasper
AHMEN,
Alabama Honduran Medical Education Network, is planning a benefit
buffet/silent auction on April 1, 2006 to raise support money for
various ongoing projects in Honduras. We are planning to hold this
event at Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Curry, AL and anticipate
200-300 people in attendance. We are asking local businesses to
consider donating to this auction by contributing goods and/or services
to be auctioned at the event. Anything you might be willing to donate
- goods, services or a cash donation would be very much appreciated.
All donations are tax deductible. Listed below are current
projects that need funding.
1. Limon Soup Kitchen: This program has been running for about one
year and is in need of additional funding to help rebuild the kitchen
lost in Hurricane Gamma as well as continue day to day costs. This
project feeds approximately 65 orphans and 25 widows in the remote
fishing village of Limon. For summer ’06 we need construction
teams to complete permanent home for the soup kitchen on the second
floor of a local church. Also needed is a deep freezer. For $10/mo.
you can supply the food and clothing for one orphan
2. Limon Sewing School: The ladies of this remote fishing village
asked AHMEN to “teach them to fish”. Their idea was
to start a sewing school. There have been over 30 ladies graduate
from this school. The graduates have found good paying jobs in sewing
programs, started their own business, or sew out of their homes.
The ladies have asked AHMEN to help them build a new, expanded building
on property donated by the town. The school will continue its primary
mission of training the ladies of the town to make a living sewing.
3. Pointe Pietra (Point of Rock): Mt. Vernon Baptist Church,
Curry, Alabama, teamed up with Pastor Roberto de Cruzado’s
Church and they completed building a new church in this beautiful
Gariffina Fishing Village. After the Hurricane Gamma, the area
of swamp has markedly increased. With this increase comes more
mosquitoes and therefore more malaria and Dengue Fever. In 2006
the men of Mt. Vernon will “buddy up” with the men
of Pointe Pietra and drain a malaria-infested swamp behind the
church. The ladies of both churches plan to start a sewing school
at the church to allow the women of this village to make a living.
