Gloria Lacayo Needs Our Help
Gloria
Lacayo is a long time lab technician in Honduras who has worked with
the Honduran Mission team for many years. She runs the lab in Limon.
and also takes care of the entire area when there is no doctor there.
This year
she will be working with the Birthing Project to coordinate the exchange
of
ideas, etc between the Honduran Midwifes, the American Midwifes, the
Honduran Doctors, and the American Doctors.
She began having problems a while back and requires gall blatter surgery.
She needs our assistance to help pay for the surgery. Please read the
following comments about Gloria and follow your heart.
NOTE FROM DR. KAY TAYLOR
Gloria is an amazing woman. Her father was one of the first Garifuna
MD’s in Honduras. She was going to medical school when she almost
died of parasite-induced anemia. She had to leave school; but her father
trained her to be a lab technician in his office. She serves both the
Limon and Ciriboya areas with teams that go down, including PINCC, CHIMES
and Honduranmissions. She is also the de facto social worker for Limon.
She knows everyone, and helps many young women with HIV/AIDS to get
to La Ceiba for medications. She also counsels and helps them to get
food and shelter, and funnels aid to them from various people on the
teams who’ve volunteered to help. As many of them have either
personal or family drug or alcohol problems, she sets up accounts for
them at the store, so the money is sure to go for food. Gloria’s
heart is big as all outdoors, and her wisdom has helped many to hold
on in almost hopeless situations. In this matriarchal culture, she is
a pillar of strength and motivation to her community. It’s typical
of Gloria to defer her personal needs until all our teams have gone
down, so she is available. I pray she is given the good health to carry
out her noble intentions
NOTE FROM SHARON BENTLEY
I am Sharon Bentley of the Columbiana group. It has been my honor to
have worked with Gloria several times while in Honduras. She is one
of the brightest people I have ever known in my 32+ years as a nurse. She
has guided me multiple times.x times. I can always learn from her, not
only as a medical person, but as a Christian. She has embodied the spirit
of Christ in her homeland to everyone.I have had an insight to the true
meaning of humility, love and service from this most remarkable, giving
and self sacrificing woman. I can only hope to be a small example of
what she is to many. My heart is in Honduras, and I love hearing about
them. Gloria has my heart and devotion. She has truly earned her crown
many times over. She has touched my heart and my life. I am a better
person from having the privilege to know her. Much love, Sharon Bentley
NOTE FROM LYNN FLEMMING
Gloria Lacayo:
I first met Gloria on my trip to Honduras in 2002. Not only did I meet
an excellent Laboratory Tech, I made a good and loving friend. She has
always made our clinics run smoother by giving accurate lab diagnosis
but at the same time educating us to the diseases of Honduras. We instantly
bonded over our work. I felt as though I had known Gloria all of my
life. She always gets me to make house calls with her, and she makes
me feel that I have a purpose for being in Honduras. She has unlimited
patience with me as I ask one million questions concerning plant life
and culture in Honduras.
