Luther Goes International
W
hile the Baptist Connection was in Honduras last month, several of us were in Plan de Flores meeting with Alfredo and Marianna re. the woodworking school. Who should walk in but Dr. Luther Castillo?
Luther was just back from Tegu where he received an award from the President of Honduras for his research in the relationship between Sickle Cell Disease, Hypertension, and Diabetes in the Garifina population of Honduras.
Then, on top of that, he was on his way to Europe to speak at the European Parliament on how one developing country can help another developing country in setting up sustainable health care for the disenfranchised.
For those of you who know Luther, send him e-mail and congratulations at:

Along with Luther at Plan de Flores were Dr. Angel Luis Selva Swarez, the Vice-president of ELAM, the Latin American Medical School and his wife, Dr. Mercedes Silva Reyes. Dr. Mercedes Reyes is a microbiologist who teaches at ELAM. Dr. Swaez and Dr. Reyes were visiting the Ciriboya Clinic where 8 of their recent medical graduates are doing a Family Practice Residency.

For more of this and related information, take a look at www.medicc.org. It makes for fascinating reading.

As a matter of fact, the Baptist Connection had the priviledge of working with Dr. Wendy Pyrez, from Limon, Dr. Vladamir Vagas from Cuba, and Dr. Amelia, from Punta Pietra, and Lab Technician Glady, from Cuba. They added a tremendous depth to the medical and cultural part of our mission.
