Peace Makers: Making a difference in Honduras
This is a group of unique folks at T. R. Simmons Elementary School in Jasper, Alabama. These 5th graders meet weekly and take on various community projects. One of their “jobs” is to increase the awareness of the importance of community to the younger kids in the school. They extend their vision of community to global awareness. They really do make the notion of “we live in a global society” a reality.
These unique kids have taken the Limon Soup Kitchen, which feeds 65 orphans in Honduras, on as a project. Last year they send “shoe boxes” full of Christmas Presents and school supplies for the kids. This year they incorporated the entire school of T.R. into their project and are sending multiple boxes for the use of these kids. These boxes include pencils, notebooks, erasures, various types of school supplies (and of course a few toys to remind all of us to put a little play in our lives).
I don’t know what other schools are like, but I do know we have some special kids working for their “sisters and brothers” in other countries at T.R.
Special thanks also to Counselor Cathy Jones and support mom Terry McKay.
